WAV to M4A Converter

Turn WAV recordings into compact AAC M4A files that sound great on iPhone, Mac and Apple Music.

About the WAV to M4A Converter

M4A with the AAC codec is Apple's standard lossy format. At the same bitrate AAC usually sounds a little better than MP3, and it is the native format for iPhone, iTunes and Apple Music.

A 4-minute WAV of about 40 MB becomes roughly 7.5 MB as 256 kbps AAC. If you need lossless M4A instead, choose ALAC in the converter.

How to use the WAV to M4A Converter

  1. Drop your WAV files onto the converter. AAC (M4A) is already selected.
  2. Keep 256 kbps for music or choose 128 kbps for speech.
  3. Click Convert and download the .m4a files.

Frequently asked questions

Is M4A the same as AAC?

M4A is the file container and AAC is the codec inside it. M4A files can also hold lossless ALAC audio.

Is AAC better than MP3?

At low and medium bitrates AAC generally sounds better than MP3. At 256 kbps and above both are close to transparent for most listeners.
