Audio Converter

Convert one file or a whole album. Tags carry over to the new files. Conversion runs in your browser, so there are no uploads, no queues and no size limits beyond your device's memory.

About the Format Converter

SoundBench Audio Converter changes audio files between MP3, FLAC, WAV, ALAC, AAC (M4A), OGG Vorbis, Opus and AIFF. Add as many files as you like, choose the output format and quality, and each converted file downloads as soon as it is ready.

Title, artist, album and cover art are copied to the new file. You can also change the sample rate or convert stereo to mono during conversion.

How to use the Format Converter

  1. Drop one or more audio files onto the page, or click to choose them.
  2. Pick the output format and quality. MP3 320 kbps and FLAC are good defaults for music.
  3. Optionally change the sample rate or channel count.
  4. Click Convert. Each file downloads when it finishes.

Lossy and lossless conversion

Converting from a lossless format (FLAC, WAV, ALAC) to a lossy one (MP3, AAC) makes the file much smaller. Converting the other way, for example MP3 to FLAC, makes the file bigger but cannot restore detail the MP3 encoder removed. Lossless to lossless conversions, such as FLAC to ALAC, are bit-perfect.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a file size limit?

No fixed limit. Files are processed in your browser, so the practical limit is your device's memory. Albums of several hundred megabytes work on a typical computer.

Will converting keep my tags and album art?

Yes. Title, artist, album, track number and cover art are copied to the output when the target format supports them. You can turn this off with the Keep tags option.

Can I convert several files at once?

Yes. Drop a whole folder's worth of files and they are converted one after another with the same settings.

Does converting MP3 to FLAC improve quality?

No. The file becomes lossless from that point on, but the detail removed when the MP3 was made is gone. Use the Fake Lossless Checker to see this in a spectrogram.
