About the Headphone & Speaker Test
Use these tests to check new headphones, earbuds, speakers or a car stereo. Each test plays a sound generated live in your browser, so it works offline once the page has loaded.
The left/right test confirms channels are not swapped. The polarity test finds a speaker wired in reverse. The frequency sweep reveals rattles and dead spots, and the hearing check estimates the highest frequency you can hear.
How to use the Headphone & Speaker Test
- Turn your system volume down and set the test volume slider low.
- Play Left, Center and Right and confirm each comes from the right place.
- Compare In phase and Out of phase. In phase should sound centered and solid.
- Run the frequency sweep and the hearing check.
Frequently asked questions
How do I check if my headphones are left and right correctly?
Press Left. The chime should come only from the left ear cup. If it comes from the right, the headphones are on backwards or the channels are swapped.
What does the polarity test show?
If one speaker is wired with + and − reversed, the In phase test sounds thin and diffuse while Out of phase sounds fuller. Swap the wires on one speaker to fix it.
What frequency range can humans hear?
About 20 Hz to 20 kHz when young. The upper limit typically drops to around 16 kHz by age 30 and lower with age.
